P5 Woofer Cone
No bark in your subs? Tired of the same sorry-looking woofers? Sony has the cure with our P5 Series of subwoofers. While the shape is candy for the eyes, the real treat is for the ears.
The P5 has some unique design features that make it a force to be reckoned with. The cone is made of polypropylene, which is a strong, lightweight and durable cone material. The P5 Turbo Cone design contains spiral ribs for increased rigidity, which also act to virtually eliminate all standing waves on the cone's surface. Even lower distortion is realized as a result. The surface area has also been increased, improving Sound Pressure Level by increasing the amount of air moved with each thump of the cone.
The P5 also has a 4-layer, edge-wound voice coil that provides plenty of copper to pass the current necessary for high power reliability. The cap at the top of the voice coil former stabilizes the former's "roundness" and strengthens the connection between the cone and the former. The rear vent allows air to pass through from the pistonic motion of the cone, cooling the inside of the voice coil and keeping the beats hot. The P5's three-layer woven dampers provide enhanced cone control and have the lead wires woven in to prevent tinsel fatigue and shorting to the frame.
