Front Panel (Call in Progress)

EC/NC Menu Adjustment Feature

The Bluetooth® connectivity of the MEX-BT5000 is everything you would expect in a phone companion. It offers the ability to place and receive calls right from the front panel or with the wireless remote.

The range of coverage on Bluetooth® devices is typically 30 feet (maximum) and once the initial pairing of devices is done, they can connect automatically whenever they come into range with one another.

The MEX-BT5000 has the ability to receive contacts from your phone so that all your important numbers are right there in the head unit, just a few taps of the joystick away. It has a built in microphone (in the top left corner of the head unit, behind the faceplate) and when on a call, it mutes the audio while channeling the sound through the vehicle's speakers. The microphone can be adjusted to suit the installation through the Echo Cancellation/Noise Cancellation (EC/NC) feature in the Phone Settings menu. You can even select which front speaker (Front Left, Front Right, or Both) is used to channel the caller's voice! Both of these features can be adjusted while the call is in progress so you can pinpoint the best results in real time.

There is an impressive list of connectivity options and capabilities for placing and receiving calls as you would expect from Sony, but most of all it's really a seamless and safer way to place and receive calls in the car while enjoying all the benefits of a top shelf Sony mobile audio component. The MEX-BT5000 is the future of blending entertainment with communications in the car!

For more detailed information on Pairing, refer to the MEX-BT5000 Owner's Manual.

Features And Benefits Of The Sony® MEX-BT5000 CD Receiver

Feature Benefit
Bluetooth® Hands Free Profile (HFP) The MEX-BT5000 supports hands free communications for Bluetooth® enabled mobile phones and audio devices. It supports both placing and receiving calls in a number of different ways as well as enhanced features such as numeric dialing and automated muting of the audio system while on the phone.
Streaming Wireless Audio - Bluetooth® Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) The MEX-BT5000 supports audio playback from Bluetooth enabled audio devices as a source input (sort of like another AUX input, only wireless!). Any audio playback device that uses the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) can link with the MEX-BT5000 for streaming 2 channel, full range 20Hz-20KHz audio.
Wireless Control of Devices - Bluetooth® Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) The Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) provides a standard interface by which connected Bluetooth devices can be controlled from the MEX-BT5000. Typically this would allow you to not only listen to an audio source via the A2DP profile, but if AVRCP is supported you could control that device as well. This control can be either from the front panel or the remote control included with MEX-BT5000.
Phone Book Transfer Support - Bluetooth® Object Push Profile (OPP) Upload the phone book from a Bluetooth® enabled mobile phone using the Bluetooth connection in the Object Push Profile (OPP) mode so dialing from the MEX-BT5000 front panel is as easy as navigating the phone book. In some cases it's even easier than dialing from the phone!
Robust Dialing Features The phone book in the MEX-BT5000 stores a maximum of 50 contacts (3 numbers per contact) and 6 preset numbers (can dial direct from the numbers 1-6 on the front panel). The user can also dial from a Dialed/Received Calls list as well as inputting the numbers manually (either on the unit or on the mobile phone). There is a great security feature to the MEX-BT5000 so that any of the phone book, dialed/received calls, and other sensitive call information can be locked out by inputting a 4 digit code.

Bluetooth® Q&A

Q. What is Bluetooth® technology?

A. Bluetooth® technology is how mobile phones, computers, and PDAs, not to mention a broad selection of other devices (even audio devices), can be easily interconnected using a short-range 2.4 GHz wireless connection. Using this technology, users can have all mobile and fixed electronic Bluetooth® enabled devices be totally coordinated. The range of coverage on Bluetooth® devices is typically 30 feet (maximum) and once the initial pairing of devices is done, they can connect automatically whenever they come into range with one another.

Q. What is "pairing"?

A. To connect two Bluetooth® enabled devices, a pairing process must be done the first time. Pairing establishes a trusted relationship by learning a shared "link key" code. Devices only have to be paired at the first initial connection of the devices. After the first initial connection, devices can connect to each other without going through the pairing process because they essentially already "know" each other. With the MEX-BT5000, there are essentially 4 ways to pair (2 for phones and 2 for audio devices).

1) Initiate pairing from the MEX-BT5000 to a Bluetooth® mobile phone

2) Initiate pairing from a Bluetooth® mobile phone to the MEX-BT5000

3) Initiate pairing from the MEX-BT5000 to a Bluetooth® audio device

4) Initiate pairing from a Bluetooth® audio device to the MEX-BT5000

Either device can initiate the pairing request and then the other device will respond accordingly with the 4 digit "link key", which will have to be duplicated on the other device if it doesn't already have a default link key. These link key codes must match up exactly. Accepting a message like "Allow Connection" usually completes the pairing process.

Q. How many Bluetooth® enabled devices can be paired to the MEX-BT5000?

A. Only one Bluetooth mobile phone and one Bluetooth audio device can be connected at a time. The unit can't have multiples of either devices connected at one time. However, up to 6 mobile phones and 6 audio devices can be paired/registered in the device lists. If changing from one phone/audio player to a different one, the connection will fail if the first device isn't disconnected from the head unit, through the device menu.

If the constant power is disconnected from the MEX-BT5000 the memory won't be erased. The phonebook, received/dialed calls lists, preset calls, and Bluetooth® device pairings will all remain in the memory.

This head unit has seamless Bluetooth® mobile phone integration, including importing the phone book, recalling last dialed or received numbers, and direct dial right from the front panel! And the easy to navigate front panel includes a rotary encoder joystick control that controls all of the BT5000's functions.

On top of all of the intuitive mobile phone connectivity features, this is a top shelf audio head unit as well. With the ability to connect a portable media device and play ATRAC3plus/MP3/WMA files, this unit opens up the possibilities to just about anything that can be carried into the car that plays back audio! Adding Satellite Radio, iPod Control, or a CD/MD changer can be done at any time. And remember, if the audio device is Bluetooth enabled with the A2DP streaming audio profile, it can be connected to the MEX-BT5000 without wires and have full range 2 channel audio.

User Tip: Using The Joystick Controls

VOLUME
Turn right/left to adjust volume up/down. Volume adjustment can be done in any menu and on all connected sources. During an incoming call, the volume control will adjust incoming ring tone volume and stay at that level for subsequent calls. While the call is in progress, the volume controls the level of the caller's voice. Again, this level becomes the default for subsequent calls.

ACCESSING MENUS
The three buttons to the immediate right of the joystick will access all menus. There are two dedicated menu items on the MEX-BT5000 for the Bluetooth functionality labeled "Bluetooth" and "CALL". A third button labeled "MENU" accesses other menu items.

NAVIGATING MENUS/FUNCTIONS
Pressing the joystick up/down and left/right let you navigate through the menus or navigate through the source selection. Functions on the sources would include radio stations, track on a CD, and other similar functions when an iPod or satellite radio tuner is connected.

SELECTING MENU ITEMS
Pressing in on the joystick works as the enter button. Whenever you arrive at the selection you wish to select on the menu, pressing the joystick will choose that selection.

Scosche® Bluetooth® iPod Car Transmitter/Receiver Kit

The Sony MEX-BT5000 also supports Bluetooth® enabled audio devices using the A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) profile.

Normally when you connect a mobile phone to the MEX-BT5000 you are connecting using the HFP (Hands Free Profile). This allows support of all the call functions that you would normally utilize for Bluetooth® voice communication. During times when you aren't talking on the phone, you can utilize the Bluetooth® communication link to connect a 2 channel audio device into the MEX-BT5000 for completely wireless 20Hz-20KHz audio transmission. These type of Bluetooth devices are available that connect to MP3 players or iPods (or other audio devices) that allow you to broadcast with the ease of FM modulation but, through the A2DP profile, transmit the audio at full bandwidth for up to a CD quality audio signal. Scosche Industries makes a Bluetooth iPod Car Transmitter and Receiver Kit and is illustrated in the picture to the left. It is part # IPBCK and can be found on their website, www.scosche.com.

If the device supports the Bluetooth® AVRCP profile (in addition to audio) it can be controlled by the MEX-BT5000, either through the front panel or the wireless remote.

Selecting a Bluetooth enabled audio device can be done in the SOURCE menu once the device has been successfully paired with the MEX-BT5000 head unit.
