Introduction: Sony® Marine Audio Products

Marine audio is a growing and demanding market which requires engineering beyond traditional mobile products. Sony builds marine audio products that feature many of the same cutting edge technologies as Sony Mobile products, yet with the eye toward the important design considerations that marine products must consider such as water, wind, salt, and sunlight. Sony marine audio products are what make boating not just a trip, but an experience!

Sony's marine audio products include everything you need to "Soak Them With Sound"; source units, speakers, amplifiers, and accessories. Whether it's a simple headunit and a couple of speakers, or a full blown audio system with multiple control points, multiple source inputs, amplifiers, and even subwoofers, Sony marine audio products have it covered in style.

The mainstay of the Sony Marine products are headunits and full range speakers, pictured at left. These products have the perfect blend of reliability, excellent cosmetics, and value pricing.

New for 2007 is a water resistant source unit*, a marine amplifier and a 10" marine subwoofer. Like all Sony marine products, the newest items are designed and engineered with the marine elements in mind for high reliability.

Together, all the items in the Sony Marine product line add to the appeal of recreational or commercial boating customers and offer a greater range of possibilities for entertainment on the water. If it sounds great on land or sea, it's probably a Sony!

Key Feature: IPx5 Product Specification

CDX-HS70MW

IPx5 Testing
12.5 Liters per minute @ a 2.5 meter distance
for 3 minutes straight in all directions

Many people do not know that products intended for use in the marine environment should be engineered with water resistance in mind. They may assume they are, but they do not realize that they must be designed and engineered that way. While being totally water proof (submergible) is challenging for electronics, there are certain degrees of separation between products that are deemed "water resistant". True marine products are more than just colored in white.

The international protection code (or IP) has a standard called "IPx5" which indicates the resistance of a product to a spray jet (simulating a severe splash at the rate of 12.5 liters/minute) at a distance of 2.5 meters for a period of three minutes in all directions. That's a lot more than a just a "splash".

Sony's newest marine source unit, the CDX-HS70MW meets the IPx5 standard for water resistance. In addition, it's engineered to withstand salt and UV exposure, so you know that this will provide many years of listening pleasure in the marine environment without those accidental splashes causing damage to the unit.

Adding the HS70MW to the Sony Marine lineup means that there is a marine source unit that is appropriate for your customer throughout the line. Whether the needs are low stakes recreational fishing or hard core wakeboarding, Sony Marine has it covered!

Sony XS-L100P5M 10" Marine Subwoofer

XS-L100P5M

Sony's Marine subwoofer is a 10" 800 Watt peak (200 Watt RMS) monster! With a superior design including UV and salt resistant frame and basket, coated tinsel leads, gold plated terminals, and a strontium magnet structure, this 10" sub will stand up to the harsh marine environment. The stylish white protective grille is also included.

It's designed to function in infinite baffle designs, which means that it can be placed in locations that have spaces of various size that may be intended for storage or other purposes and you need not worry about having an exact size enclosure to ensure top performance.

Sony XM-604M Marine Amplifier

XM-604M Amplifier

The Sony XM-604M marine amplifier is engineered with the marine environment in mind. It has a flexible 4/3 channel design which means it can utilize a pair of channels in bridged mode to route more power to a subwoofer if necessary. It has a coated circuit board as well as gold plated hardware terminals for resistance to corrosion and the elements. The finish of the amplifier is both UV and rust resistant so the amplifier will continue to look as good as it sounds.

On the business end for input selection, the amplifier features High Pass and Low Pass active crossovers fixed at 80Hz and a MOSFET power supply for the power inputs. The XM-604M can support 2 Ohm stereo loads and has the connections located across one side of the amplifier for ease of installation. Use multiple XM-604M for installations where several "zones" of speakers are in play so that each amplifier level can be set independently to match the listening space.

Features And Benefits Of The Sony® Marine Audio Products

Feature Benefit
SSIR-EXA AM/FM Tuner (Sony Marine Headunits) The SSIR-EXA tuner circuitry in Sony Marine headunits can actually adjust the tuner's bandwidth automatically. This ensures optimal performance in both congested and sparsely populated FM areas.
Built In High Power Output (Sony Marine Headunits) 52 Watts x 4 Channels maximum power will do exceptionally well on Sony Marine speakers or other coaxial speaker selections.
Preamp Outputs (Sony Marine Headunits) Adding amplifiers is easy with preamp outputs. Even the entry level marine headunit offers a selectable REAR or SUB preout and the upper level units have multiple dedicated preamp outputs for maximum system building flexibility
Multiple Format Playback (Sony Marine Headunits) Commercially recorded CDs, "burned" CD-R discs with MP3 or ATRAC3plus™ (all marine headunits except CDX-GT10M), and an even wider range of possibilities via AUX IN connections mean the Sony Marine headunits can play back just about anything you can imagine! The CDX-HS70MW plays just about all the formats including MP3, WMA, AAC, and ATRAC3plus.
1 bit D/A Converter (CDX-GT10M) The same Delta-Sigma D/A conversion process used in higher end CD players allows the technology to be used in Sony's CDX-GT10M Marine headunit without compromising sound or price!
24 bit D/A Converter (CDX F50M and CDX-R30M, CDX-HS70MW) Stepping up to the 24 bit D/A conversion allows the playback to be considerably more accurate with a wide range of media formats and compression rates.
BBE® MP (CDX-F50M) BBE® MP is specifically designed for compressed sound formats, such as MP3 and ATRAC3plus™. BBE® MP restores and enhances harmonic content that is typically lost or reduced during the compression process, bringing back the warmth, detail, and subtle nuances in the original uncompressed recording. Basically, the BBE® MP feature helps compressed music formats sound less "compressed".
DSO (CDX-F50M, CDX-HS70MW) Proprietary Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO) circuitry induces subtle phase shift in the preamp output, different in each output channel, to simulate a sound source that is higher in origin. Further, the frequency response in a section of the sound is altered to further enhance the perception that the sound is originating from a point higher up than it actually is. These two factors combine to seemingly raise the sound stage, and spread it wider across the dash, even if the speakers are mounted low in the doors. The result of DSO is a better front stage even if the speakers are mounted in locations that are low in the boat!
EQ3 (CDX-F50M and CDX-R30M, CDX-HS70MW) Seven different presets offer a wide variety of solutions to different sound reproduction challenges found in the marine environment, and each preset can be fine tuned for optimal performance in every application and installation. Each preset focuses on different areas of the audio spectrum, and the center equalization frequencies change according to the specific needs of the individual music types identified by the preset name.
UniLink™ CD Changer Control (CDX F50M and CDX-R30M, CDX-HS70MW) CD changer control has the capacity to control the functions of a CD changer using the front panel controls. The two components communicate with each other through UniLink™, Sony's proprietary remote component control system architecture. Up to 7 CD and/or other UniLink™ components can be wired into the audio system, all of which communicate with each other. The use of multiple changers requires the addition of an XA-C40, a UniLink™ multi-changer adapter. Other components, such as the XA-300 auxiliary input adapter, or the RM-X55M remote control panel, come equipped with a UniLink™ pass-thru, so no additional adapters are required if these are added to an existing system.
IPx5 Certified Components Sony's CDX-HS70MW headunit is IPx5 certified against water intrusion. With a testing process that sprays a water stream at the rate of 12.5 liters per minute from a distance of 2.5 meters and in all directions for a period of 3 minutes, this means more than "splash proof". IPx5 means these products are truly water resistant*.
UV and Salt Resistant Finishes Whether it's Sony headunits, speakers, or a Sony Marine amplifier, special care has been taken to select finishes that resist the elements of the marine environment, including UV rays and salt.
High Power Handling (Sony Marine Speakers) Sony Marine speakers can handle plenty of power, with clarity, presence, and accuracy. Sony speaker technologies ensure low distortion and efficient reproduction of even the most demanding sources.
  • XS-MP1610B = 140 Watts Max / 40 Watts RMS
  • XS-MP1610W = 140 Watts Max / 40 Watts RMS
  • XS-MP1620B = 160 Watts Max / 45 Watts RMS
  • XS-MP1620W = 160 Watts Max / 45 Watts RMS
  • XS-L100P5M = 800 Watts Max / 200 Watts RMS
Full Range Speaker Capability (Sony Marine Speakers) High sensitivity or power handling means nothing if the speaker does not sound good or if it can't cover the frequencies evenly. The Sony marine full range 6.5" speakers have frequency responses below 60Hz on the low side and up beyond 20kHz on the high side. This means that the 20Hz-20kHz full range of sound is right there, neatly all in one speaker. Combine these with Sony marine subwoofers to play the lowest bass notes and you have a marine speaker system that is going to impress your ears and your senses out there on the water.
Choice of Grille Color (Sony 6.5" Marine Speakers) The "B" or "W" designation in the product numbers on the 6.5" full range speakers simply designates the color of the grille. B is for black, W is for white.
Insulated Tinsel Leads (Sony Marine Speakers) Sony Marine speakers feature insulated tinsel leads that further protect the speaker from moisture and the elements of the marine environment. Over time, this becomes VERY important.
CEA-2006 Compliant (Sony Marine Amplifier) The Sony XM-604M marine amplifier is rated to deliver 60 watts x 4 into 4 Ohms per CEA-2006-A reporting requirements. This power level is a perfect match for Sony Marine full range speakers and the channels can be easily bridged to generate more power for the Sony 10" Marine subwoofer.
High Pass / Low Pass Filters (Sony Marine Amplifier) The Sony XM-604M marine amplifier features selectable HP or LP filters fixed at 80Hz to tailor the bandwidth to the speakers connected to the amplifier. Choose HP setting for the Sony Marine full range speakers or LP for the Sony 10" Marine subwoofer.
Bridgeable (Sony Marine Amplifier) The Sony XM-604M marine amplifier is a 4/3 channel design which means that two of the amplifier channels can be bridged to provide more power to a speaker such as the Sony 10" Marine subwoofer.

Anyone who enjoys great sound while boating, whether it be recreational or commercial marine applications, will appreciate the thoughtful design and exceptional engineering of Sony Marine Audio products. Great sound should also be reliable and easy to use. The headunits feature UV and salt resistant finishes as well as coated circuit boards for increased reliability. The full range speakers feature common sizing for easy drop in applications and a choice of white or black grilles. The Sony Marine amplifier features a thoughtful 4 channel design with selectable 80Hz HP/LP filters as well as a UV and salt resistant finish and coated circuit boards. Overall, the real reason that someone would buy Sony Marine Audio products is because they are designed and engineered to work reliably in the harsh marine environments that normal "car audio" products can't handle. This really means that one spends more time enjoying their boat instead of figuring out corrosion or vibration related problems that is common with other non-marine entertainment equipment.

Sony Marine Full Range 6.5" Speakers
Available with Black or White Grilles

Q: What speaker sizes are commonly used in a marine application?

The 6.5" round speaker is by far the most common marine speaker size, whether it's large yachts or recreational boats. It provides excellent sound reproduction yet is sized appropriately enough to fit into many potential locations. Sony offers two different 6.5" speakers (the full range version is shown) and each in two color choices. The "B" or "W" designation in the product numbers on the 6.5" full range speakers simply designates the color of the grille. B is for black, W is for white.

Key Feature: Front Panel Aux In or Rear Panel Aux Lite

Front Panel AUX Input

Rear Panel "AUX LITE" Input

Sony makes it easier than ever to connect most portable audio devices to your marine audio system by adding a front panel auxiliary input on the CDX-GT10M. With just a simple mini-jack cable, most portable audio players or portable DVD players can be plugged into this headunit.

It's also a simple matter to hard-wire auxiliary sources into the system by using the CDX-F50M Aux Lite feature. If the changer control audio input isn't being used for anything (such as a CD changer), it can be used as an AUX IN. Simply connect an RCA audio cable to the "BUS AUDIO IN" connection, and use it as the input for a portable audio device, video system, or any other audio device that you may want to incorporate into the system.

In either case, the SOURCE control is used to cycle to the AUX source, full range audio is transferred directly into the unit, and volume is controlled through the headunit's front panel volume control.

Extras & Upgrades For Sony® Marine Audio Products

GMD-616

RM-X55M

3.5mm Y-Cable (not included)

GMD-616
This is a headunit cover for use in the marine environment. This is the ideal companion to any of the Sony Marine headunits. With a durable, injection molded polycarbonate frame and smoked lens, this cover will keep the headunit fully protected and still make it readily accessible. The cover flips open but seals with an o-ring seal when closed, which means water stays out of your Sony headunit. This is probably as useful for accidental drink spills as for lake/sea water intrusion. This cover is recommended for all of Sony's traditional DIN sized Marine headunits to ensure that anything more than that accidental splash or that long term exposure to air near the oceans will keep the unit performing as expected for a long time.

RM-X55M
This wired remote control actually works for all Sony headunits that feature UniLink changer control as well as wired remote capability. The RM-X55M's water resistant marine design is the perfect compliment to any of the compatible Sony Marine headunits. The 2 line display makes it easy to read and it's compatible with the SAT ready headunits for satellite radio text display. Two controllers can be used with a 3.5mm mini-y cable (not included) for larger marine installations where you would like to keep the headunit located in one area but maintain control in other locations in the boat.
